hook up 2 computers to one printer

My wife & I both have a computer and we would like to share a printer. We both use Windows xp. Since neither one of us has a wifi card, I assume it will need to be hard-wired. Our desk are only 6 ft apart with the printer in the middle. I tried networking both computers but i can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Larry

There are a few options. You can use a switch similar to the 1 in the following link
to share the printer.

Or you can setup a LAN and share the printer that way. Once the LAN is setup and
working this will be next step.

One of the computers has to be the dedicated pc that is hooked up to the printer.
Basically you just run the small office/network setup wizard on both machines and
enable file/printer sharing. Just make sure both are labeled the same workgroup
name. Also, how do you have the 2 pcs networked, do you have them both attached
to a router? Or are you using a cable going between the 2.

See if this page will help you out.

Sgt and John's advice is good, I have something completely different to add ! My wife and I share a printer in this way, and she has just been printing Christmas cards . . . several of which now comprise the text of speech notes I've been writing for a dinner engagement. Not very festive ! The print jobs neatly interleave themselves and to reduce marital strife its wise to remember this :-)))

IF the OP has a laser printer (probably not, but) the switch can be hazardous to
the health of the printer. This can occur if grounds are poor, and there is a difference
in the grounds between the printer and the computer. A properly designed switch will
also prevent this.
