I have a compaq (from 2001) and would like to know what are the chances that the upgrade from sp1 to sp2 will work on that ??

There's little danger that SP2 won't run on the hardware, although there are occasional software glitches. Back up your data to be safe, and of course an image backup would put you back exactly where you were before the upgrade no matter what might go wrong.

SP3 would be a better bet, it includes the SP-2 patches included.
If your still running SP-1 you are security vulnerable
