Dual Boot with Windows 7

Novice, so please be kind. I'd like to have my system boot up so I have the option
of continuing with my windows xp pro or windows 7. I assume I can do that with the
option showing up where no I only have the xp displayed. I assume I can partition
my C: drive, and load W 7 on tht one, but would perfer to have W 7 on another serial
drive. Could someone explain how I can do this with minimum risk. I have the current
C: backed up with a current image file on external drive.
BTW is there going to be an annoyances W7 forum? Thanks, Dave G.

There are many good tutorials on the Internet on How to Dual Boot 7 with XP installed
first. Read up first. Installing to a second SATA Drive is the safest way. As far
as a Windows 7 forum, you may just need to check your eye sight out.:)

You can not repartition on the fly while installing and simultaneously preserve what
is currently on your C:\ drive.
You can repartition ahead of time, and then reload your image drive onto the new
smaller C:\ drive, then install W7 to the new partition and you'll have dual boot.
Open your eyes, there has been a W7 forum here for several months.

My eyes are now wide open. Thanks for both of the responses.

Good idea to read through it before starting, to give you some ideas what to be on
the look out for.

I have twoi hard drives. I simply installed Win 7 on the 2nd drive. That is it.
Just be sure you choose the correct drive/partition. Boot menu will come up with
Win 7 highlighted so if you are booting into CP you need to sit there and choose
that one at startup. Works fine..

Hi David,
I don't know if it's too late to weigh in on the subject, but there's a relatively
easy way to do what you want.
First, hookup a blank HDD, jumper to Master, format\partition and install W7.
Shut down. Hookup your XP drive to the middle (black) plug on the cable and jumper
it to Slave. Restart.
When you're in W7 Explorer, open the XP Slave C:\ drive and *copy* these three files
to the root of your W7 C:\ drive: NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, and boot.ini.
Reboot and you'll see W7 first on the boot screen with a countdown and WXP below
it. Hit the ▼ arrow, hit Enter and, violà (!) you're in XP.
You can also change the boot order in msconfig in W7.
Hope this helps.
