Software thinks maximum screen resolution is 1024x768 but my desktop setting is 1280x768

This happened after the latest round of updates for my pc today 11/5/2009. My laptop
is a tablet pc running windows XP sp3 or whatever the newest update is.
My screen resolution has been set to 1280x768 from the start, but now all of my software
only maximizes to 1024x768 resolution, leaving the rest of the desktop showing to
the right.
How can I change this so the maximum size for software is correct to the screen resolution?

Uninstall the last round of updates to see if it fixes the problem.

It was ICQ 6.5, it has some dopey feature that resizes the screen layout for other
open software when I maximized the ICQ software on the right side of the screen,
when I closed it to task bar the screen never resized.
