First work out if it is the monitor or your PC by either: Trying your monitor the another PC, or Borrowing a monitor to try with your PC BTW when you say "I have read the thread on this subject". which thread are you referring to ?

Most likely your monitor dieing, if it is a CRT (looks like an old TV tube) try smacking
on the side. Might get it working for a little bit until you can get another one.

That pretty well nails it to be the monitor or the cable. Worth pulling out the cable between the monitor and the PC both ends and carefully re-inserting it. Otherwise its a new monitor :-( I would still try your monitor on another PC if you can - that would confirm things before you spend money. PS A late thought - if you have the manual for your monitor (or can look it up on the internet) you might find there's a button on the front you can use to reset all its settings - it is just possible I suppose that you have managed to turn its brightness right down ?
