I'm not sure exactly how to do it but.....
you need to modifiy one of the following files:
c:\windows\resources\themes\luna.theme
c:\windows\resources\themes\luna\luna.msstyles
c:\windows\resources\themes\luna\*\*.dll
The trick is that a theme defines what it looks like. When you go back to the classic
theme the strat button is gray

Yeah you're right Belldandy:
I just located the Start Button ugly green bitmap. It's located in C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna\luna.msstyles
If you open that file with Resource Hacker (download Resource Hacker here if you
don't already have it: http://www.rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/) THen Goto
Bitmap/BLUE_STARTBUTTON_BMP you will find the ugly green Bitmap here... modify it
if you like, just make sure that the new bitmap file you use is the same height,
width, # of colors, and possibly file size.
(BTW, obviously this only changes the ugly green Start Button that is used with the
blue color scheme... copies of it are also in HOMESTEAD_STARTBUTTON_BMP, METALLIC_STARTBUTTON_BMP,
etc
Thanks for the clues Belldandy,

Here's How:
Goto C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
and copy the Luna directory. Paste the copy on your desktop for a moment and rename
it "Mytheme" or some such. Now cut that new "Mytheme" directory and paste it next
to the Luna directory so it'll be:
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Mytheme
Now go into the Mytheme directory and locate "luna.msstyles"... rename it to "Mytheme.msstyles".
Now use Resource Hacker to open up your Mytheme.msstyles. Replace any or all of
the STARTBUTTON_BMP files that are located in the Bitmap section... edit the pictures
if you like, etc.
Save the Mytheme.msstyles and now goto Display Properties / Appearance and you should
now have 3 listings under "Windows and Buttons": (1) Windows Classic Style choice
and (2) options of Windows XP Style. One of these two Windows XP Style selections
is your new Mytheme.msstyles
If you've been trying to change the original Luna.msstyles file like I was for awhile
then you're probably running into errors such as "Windows Classic Style" being your
only option. I discovered that a prog called "styleXP" gets around this error by
creating a new directory for your theme and you must name the .msstyles file the
same as the directory name

He forgot to say that you also got to make a "mytheme.theme" which goes into the
theme direktory.
Just copy the Luna.theme to your desktop and edit it with notpad or such. Everywhere
where it says "luna" write "mytheme". Save it and copy it to the theme direktory
(where the other .theme are).
Then you have to search for the theme in the Display Properties / Appearance setup.
Now you got 2 Windows XP
But that wont help :P because the Recourse Hacker Prog. seems to save garbage. At
least my version does (3.3.3).
If anyone has succesfully done all this please write me an e-mail.

Resource Hacker works just fine, I managed to change the start button color. You
need to rename luna_original.msstyles to mytheme_original.msstyles in mytheme folder
as well. Also, you need to rename copied Luna.theme to mytheme.theme and edit it
the way you said. While you're at it, you could delete the line directly below "[Theme]"
so you don't get two Windows XP themes listed in display properties.

What version of Resource Hacker did you use to successfully replace the bitmap in
your .msthemes file? I've tried two versions, 3.3.4 and 3.4.0.79, both of which take
the original file at 4,186,256 bytes and save it as a 4,182,160 byte file that doesn't
work properly.

Just a suggestion :-)
Y don't you try style XP? If you don't like the idea of having to use a prog. to
change the looks of the windows theme you can find a Patch for the windows theme
that will allow you to use all those great themes that's designed for use with Style
XP without useing the actual program and If I'm correct the creators of Style XP
are also the creators of the patch.
You'd then just have to download a theme and place it in your windows theme directory
to use that theme.
Go ahead fire up Google and search for Patchxp and good luck..

The easiest way to do this is (at least worked for me) :
Get the Resource Hacker from http://delphi.icm.edu.pl/ftp/tools/ResHack.zip
open the Resource Hacker app, select "all files (*.*)" and go to
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
here open the file luna.msstyles
now choose bitmap, scroll down to BLUE_STARTBUTTON_BMP when changing the default
xp theme in blue (default) color or METALLIC_STARTBUTTON_BMP (silver) or HOMESTEAD_STARTBUTTON_BMP
(green) depending on the theme color u prefer. Select the file 1029 and copy the
image of the startbutton background u can see on the right to your memory (3 green
buttons above each other)
paste the image to your favourite imaging prog (not the default win imaging - some
that keeps the file resolution like Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop) and start
editing to the color u want. Remember to keep the borders of the button on the same
place....do not change the purple color if u want to keep the transparency and the
rounded shape on the right side. U might recieve a message about changing a system
file....just click cancel....tried to restart only once, so not sure if this will
be bothering in future again or not...if so, u will need to turn the Windows File
Protection off before doing this...a method of doing it can be found here http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/disablesystemfilechecker.php
hope it will work for other users and the annoyancing message won't appear again.

I did everything this thread said, copy luna.msstyles into another folder as mytheme.msstyles
and modified a bitmap, edited a .theme file and saved it as mytheme.theme etc..
When I went to load this as my theme, the preview window under display shows the
recycle bin in the corner but just barely, and the application example shows just
a black box With 1/2 cut off text in the title bar.
The first time I did this, i just booted to Win98 and copied my modified luna.msstyles
file over the original (luckily i saved a backup). When I booted back to XP, the
View was of Classic Windows. I opened display properties and went to appearance to
try and get to metallic, but when I hit apply, everything on the screen except icons
went black.
The second time I tried this, there wasn't even an option to change to the default
Windows XP view. So I'm stuck.
I later went to http://www.themexp.org/howto.php and read this: "
Visual Styles
In order to install visual styles, you must install TGT Soft's Style XP. This will
allow non-signed/checksummed themes with custom visual styles. Otherwise, the edited
visual style defaults back to Windows Classic. "
Does this refer to all styles files? I don't want to get Style XP because I know
there has to be a method of doing this correctly.
Thanks for any help.

You guys actually do not know much about computers if you don't realize that Windows
XP is the same OS as 2000 but has some added color which is equivalent to a service
pack or packing in a "cool theme" The OS is essentially the same but MS did not
push the NT kernel onto the general computer user by way of windows 2000, as you
should know that Windows 2000 was not targeted to home users, they waited till XP
to convince the home user to use it. So don't be stupid and talk about stuff you
have no clue about by putting down others.

We tend to use don't, rather than, don,t, otherwise you get too many commas, as you
can see. The ' replaces the o of the word not.
However in written English, which is not written speech, it is customary to use:
do not , rather than don't.
It is becoming rather like a kindergarten.

Go to windows.rogierstuger.com, click

Here's mine:
You need to patch

i think ive tried the res_hack method ie/replaced bitmap etc, and STILL havent been
able to change the color. all i get is the start menu becomes "classic".
i think somebody mentioned here about the difference in filesize. probably true.
windows recognises this, and either;
(i) disallow it to be displayed (hence the alternative display of classic start menu,
in my case)
or...
(ii) the windows file protection (wfp) does not work for *.msstyles? i can replace
/ modify other system files (ie/ explorer.exe etc) with no problems but i've noticed
that the moment windows realises that the file's being tempered, it resets the *.msstyle
back to its original (i know this from the unmistakable file size)
..so has anyone had better luck than i did? i dont know anyone here who have achieved
this successfully. if you have, do post a screengrab of your start menu! coz i aint
seeing any, despite all the solutions suggested.
oh and i tried the unpatch .dll method too. didnt work either

It's so easy...
Switch off windows file protection, replace explorer.exe (and whatever msstyles files
you want to replace - you need to patch uxtheme.dll to make this work), remove every
copy of the old explorer.exe from folders like dllcache, i386, system volume information
etc., and:

ah yess. finally worked. this is basically what i did
i. turned off windows file protection with http://www.x-setup.net/
ii. "patch uxtheme.dll method" from http://www.belchfire.net/article205.html did
NOT exactly work (and no, the "multipatcher" didnt work either for my version of
xp). so i went with the "replacing with a PRE-patched" method, as described in the
same page towards the end of the article. and this HAD to be done in safemode, REGARDLESS
if wfp is enabled or not. trust me.
iii. went with Mike's method; http://users.rowan.edu/~marz7821/images/Change%20the%20color%20of%20your%20start%20button.txt
for the nittygritties, "step2" onwards...
iv. when selecting one of the two "windows xp" in desktop/properties/themes, there
shouldnt be anything weird in the 'sample' window ie/ i got some blanked out black
stuff in the preview. this means that windows has realised you've got an unsigned
(tempered) system file in there and selecting+applying that will only result in the
activation of "windows classic" start button. if this happens, i think you STILL
havent got any of the steps above right. repeat.
thanks to everyone who've helped! woopeedooo

If you've used the pre-patched uxtheme.dll you should be able to use any of the downloadable
.msstyles files out there to change the whole look of XP. I've been doing it with
no problems for months. Just download a style, douple click the file and display
properties will open with the new style already previewed. Modify as you like (fonts
etc) - apply and Robert's your auntie's hubby.
No need for additional programs to apply the style - XP does the job just fine.

Download uxtheme. dll for your system. Go to www.withinwindows.com/uxtheme-patches/.
I have xp sp3 so I used file 6.0.2900.558_EN.rar. Extract it and save the uxtheme.dll
file somewhere besides desktop. Go into safe mode and go to C:\WINDOWS\ system32
and find the file uxtheme.dll, rename it to uxthemeOLD.dll. I also had a file called
uxtheme(3).dll and I renamed it uxtheme(3)OLD.dll. Now copy that other uxtheme.dll
file from withinwindows.com to the same C:WINDOWS\system32. Restart. Now download
Resource Hacker from www.angusj.com/resource hacker/. Use Europe location. Extract
it.
Now use the information from Mantis_1
Goto C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna and copy the Luna directory. Paste the copy
on your desktop for a moment and rename it "Mytheme" or some such. Now cut that new
"Mytheme" directory and paste it next to the Luna directory so it'll be: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Mytheme.
Also copy Luna.theme file to the desktop and rename it Mytheme.theme then cut and
paste it back into the directoy it came from.
Now go into the Mytheme directory and locate "luna.msstyles"... rename it to "Mytheme.msstyles".
Now use Resource Hacker to open up your Mytheme.msstyles. Replace any or all of the
STARTBUTTON_BMP files that are located in the Bitmap section, there are 3 different
sets: BLUE_STARTBUTTON_BMP, HOMESTEAD_STARTBUTTON_BMP, AND METALLIC_STARTBUTTON_BMP
... edit the pictures if you like, etc. Copy them into your favorite paint program.
Leave the pinkish edges alone or not, you'll see. In ResHacker click Action, Replace
Bitmap, Click
Open file with new bitmap, find your edited bmp file and click replace. Click File,
Save and now goto Display Properties / Appearance and you should now have 3 or 4
listings under "Windows and Buttons": (1) Windows Classic Style choice and (2) options
of Windows XP Style. One of these two Windows XP Style selections is your new Mytheme.msstyles
I did all of the stuff above except for installing the uxtheme.dll and it wouldn't
work. Once I installed that it was smooth sailing. If you want to change the text
on the Start Button go here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/change_text_on_xp_start_button1.htm

Sorry, I had to make an addition to my original post.

Goto C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna and copy the Luna directory. Paste the copy
on your desktop for a moment and
rename it "Mytheme" or some such. Now cut that new "Mytheme" directory and paste
it next to the Luna directory so it'll be:
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Mytheme. Also copy Luna.theme file to the desktop and
rename it Mytheme.theme then cut
and paste it back into the directoy it came from. You then need to open Mytheme.theme
with notepad and edit where it says
Luna change to Mytheme, 2 places I think. Save it.
Now go into the Mytheme directory and locate "luna.msstyles"... rename it to "Mytheme.msstyles".
Now use Resource Hacker
to open up your Mytheme.msstyles. Replace any or all of the STARTBUTTON_BMP files
that are located in the Bitmap section,

Dude... You're a freaking moron if you think that XP IS the same os with color
added... sorry I am so late to this game, and yes, I am in I.T.
Reason I am looking at this, for the OTHER morons that want to know WHY some people
want to change the color, is perhaps someone like ME pushed out a GPO to force Classic
Desktop.
I don't claim to know EVERYTHING about Windows, MS, or anything else, and perhaps
the IDIOTS that state you don't know what you are talking about should take a step
back, and remember it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and
prove it.
With that said.... anyone that knows how to actually to do this... with a GPO
forced, on XP AND / OR Windows 7, by all means, post cuz I am tired of my own rule!
