Get Rid of Irritating Splash Screens

It's like a sickness - applications these days are getting larger, fatter, and slower. One trick that's used is to display a Splash Screen, a large banner with the application's title, while the program loads. This supposedly helps to hide the fact that a program takes so long to load, but it often makes the program load even slower. What's even worse, is that some applications now display their splash screens when Windows starts - this is absolutely no use to the user whatsoever. Here's a list of applications' splash screens, and how to disable them:

Norton Navigator and Norton Utilities

    • Obtain NOSPLASH.ZIP (1 kb), which contains two patches for the Registry.
    • Unzip the two .REG files within NOSPLASH.ZIP, and double-click on each of them.

Eudora (all versions)

    • Open EUDORA.INI (in the Eudora directory) with a text editor, such as Notepad (make sure Eudora is not running).
    • In the [Settings] section, add the line NoSplashScreen=1. Save when finished.
    • To Qualcomm's credit, this also mentioned in the included documentation.

McAfee VShield '95

    • Open DEFAULT.VSH (or whichever .vsh you are using) with a text editor, such as Notepad (make sure VShield is not running).
    • In the [General] section, change the line bNoSplash=0 so it reads bNoSplash=1. Save when finished.

Wordperfect (all versions)

    • Right-click on the shortcut to Wordperfect, and select Properties.
    • Click on the Shortcut tab, add a space and then a colon (:) after the text in the Target field.

WS_FTP (all versions)

    • Right-click on the shortcut to WS_FTP, and select Properties.
    • Click on the Shortcut tab, add a space and then -quiet after the text in the Target field.
