How do I get the Windows Update feature to work?

If you're using the original release of Windows 98, and have removed the Internet Explorer icon from the Desktop:
If you're using Windows 98 Second Edition, and get a message that says "Thank you for your interest in Windows Update" instead of the Windows Update page when you use the Windows Update link in the Start Menu:
