Windows Annoyances - Errata in the Book
The following errata apply to all printings of this book, unless otherwise noted.
To determine which printing you have, look on the back of the title page.
All printings (after the first) have the print date to the right of the ISBN number at the bottom of the page.
The third printing, for example, has the text, "[9/97]," while the first printing has nothing.
- Index (first printing only)
- Due to a printing error, the index has a few errors in it. You can download a new version of the index in Adobe Acrobat format (download the free Acrobat reader here).

- 2nd bullet: "logos.sys" should be "logo.sys"
- Page 28
- In the second bullet in the "anywhere else..." section: "~msssetup.t" should be "~mssetup.t" (only two s's)
- Page 32
- In the "Using the Command Prompt" section, the third bullet mentions that you cannot use long filenames containing spaces with the cd command without either use the short filename or enclosing it in quotes.
This is not necessarily true for Windows NT 4.0.
- Page 42
- The pkzip line should read pkzip -& -whs a:\regback.zip c:\windows\system.dat c:\windows\user.dat
- Page 46
- The third bulletted paragraph on this page is very similar to a paragraph on the previous page (page 45).
- Page 68 (first and second printing only)
- "Empty Recycle Bin" should simply be "Recycle Bin."
- Page 70
- The "2x" should be "2x" (or 2^x)
- Page 91 (first, second, and third printings)
- In the "Clearing Unwanted Entries from Explorer's New Menu" section, it should say "...press Find Next" instead of "...press OK."
- Page 95
- 6th bullet. If you've installed a recent version of Internet Explorer, the Options command will be in the Tools menu instead of the View menu.
- Page 116 (first, second, and third printings)
- The solution "Using the Third Mouse Button" only applies to Windows95, not Windows NT 4.0.
- Page 133
- "and what becomes" should be "and becomes"
- Page 188
- "abov1e" should be "above"
- Page 191
- Menu item #7 should read, "Safe mode command prompt only - This is the same as choice 6, except that AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS are skipped. If you then want to run Windows 95 in safe mode, type win /d:m at the command prompt."
- Page 201 (first, second, and third printings)
- If the solution to "Getting Rid of the Logon Screen" doesn't work for you, try some of the solutions to "Dial-Up Networking Refuses to Remember Passwords" on page 219. They essentially deal with the same poorly designed password database in Windows95.
- Page 233
- The last two registry keys in the middle of this page are the same.
- Page 287
- "widely sited" should be "widely cited."
Additional errata may be discussed on the O'Reilly and Associates website.
