Windows 98 Annoyances, the Book - About the CD

Did your copy of Windows 98 Annoyances, the book, come without a CD?

It appears that later printings of Windows 98 Annoyances, the book, were shipped without the CD. Not to worry - everything on the CD is also available here.

The CD contained the following:

  • O'Reilly Utilities Demo - the publisher has stopped producing the software, so we are making the full version available here for free for owners of the book.

  • All the examples from Chapters 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9, and from Appendix B - to download the book examples, answer the following questions to verify you own the book:
Page 104: The label on the button in Figure 4-5 starts with which letter?

Page 198: The very first word in Chapter 6 (not including the chapter title or the "in this chapter" box) begins with which letter?

Page 96: In Figure 4-3, the item at which the mouse cursor is pointing begins with which letter?

(approx. 32 kb)

Note: the book examples are compressed into a ZIP file; you'll need an unzip utility, such as WinZip, to extract the files. Make sure to preserve the directory structure.

All of the other software mentioned in the book is available here (it was never on the CD, though).

So, why are there two different versions of the book, you ask?

O'Reilly, the publisher, recently closed their software division, and as a result, they removed the CD from later printings of Windows 98 Annoyances. Many online booksellers still list the book with the CD in their catalogs, but unless you happen to find an old printing in a book store, there is only one version currently being sold: the one without the CD. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, but please be aware that this is not the fault of your book seller (nor the fault of the author <grin>).

Did any other Annoyances books include a CD?

Nope - Windows 98 Annoyances was the only one that ever included a CD, and then only for the first few printings. Neither Windows Annoyances nor Windows Me Annoyances ever came with a CD, nor will either of the Windows XP books.
