The following is a list of errors and corrections in the first printing of Windows XP Annoyances:

Last paragraph - remove both references to Figure 2-1. (The figure shows the View tab, discussed on the next page).

Second paragraph - change "Explorere.exe" to "Explorer.exe."

First paragraph (under "/select") - the word "subobject" should appear italicized (replaceable style).

The caption for Figure 2-2 should read: "Right-click the Start button for quick access to the current user’s Start Menu folder."

The filename in step 3, "filename.ext," should appear italicized (replaceable style).

The font used for the text, "Chapter 4," in the footnote is too large.

The caption under Figure 4-12 mentions the "default View option." This text should read, "default Preview option."

There's a necessary step missing. After step 7, type the following to activate the folder shortcut:
cd ..
attrib +s "dingus"
where dingus is the name of the folder (include the quotes).

First paragraph header - change "Clean our" to "Clean out"

The last sentence of the NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate section should read:
You can stop Windows from updating the "last accessed" date for folders every time they're opened by changing this value to 1 (the default is zero), which should improve drive performance. This setting has no effect on files.

The LargeSystemCache listvariable should be in constant-width font.

Fifth line of the "A Word About Native Resolution" sidebar - there's an errant comma here. The text should read, "to display other, lower resolutions, either"

The last sentence (only) of the second paragraph under "Keyboards" (which refers Appendix B) should read as follows:
This can be done by setting the appropriate option in your BIOS (see Appendix B), but you may also have to set the InitialKeyboardIndicators Registry value, found in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard, to 0 for off or 2 for on.

The Local Users and Groups utility is only included with Windows XP Professional. Users of Windows XP Home will have to make do with the first two tools discussed in this section.

Add the following to Step 3 under "Hide the last-typed username:"
If the value exists, it may be a DWORD value. Either value type is supported here.

Page 397
The RunProgram subroutine (the last four lines in Example 9-1) is wrong. It should read the same as the RunProgram subroutine on the top of page 400.

Second paragraph - change "you won't be able to access your from from" to "you won't be able to access your hard disk from"

In the first paragraph in the "Activating Windows XP" section, the word "wasn't" should be "weren't."

Page 474
When typing any of the SET commands on this page, there should be spaces before and after each of the equals signs; otherwise, you'll receive a "syntax error" message.

Add the following note to the end of the page:
You may encounter an error to the effect that the Set command is currently disabled; unfortunately, this can only be fixed by returning to Windows and following this procedure:
  1. Start the Local Security Settings editor (secpol.msc).
  2. Navigate to \Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options in the tree.
  3. Double-click the Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders entry.
  4. Click Enabled and then click Ok.
  5. Close the Local Security Settings editor when you're done.
  6. Return to the Recovery Console and try again.

Page 513
"IDE Controller" entry - remove extra period at end of paragraph.

Page 518
"right-click a a file" should be "right-click a file"

Page 520
The errant "stet" entry should be removed entirely. In it's place, the following should appear:
set [variable=[string]]
When used without any arguments, displays a list of active environment variables (described in See "Variables and the Environment," later in this appendix). The set command is also used to assign data to environment variables.

There are a few errant entries in the index that will be removed in the next printing.
