Windows XP in a Nutshell - Errata in the Book
The following is a list of errors and corrections in the first printing of Windows XP in a Nutshell:
- Page 6
- The first row in Table 1-1, the one that begins with "User Accounts," should be removed.
- Page 6
- Table 1-1: the text in the second row, third column, should read:
Single and dual-processor systems are supported.
- Page 7
- Table 1-1: the text in the first row (third overall), second column, should read:
Build-in support for peer-to-peer networking for up to five computers.
- Page 9
- Callout #2 in Figure 2-1 should read "My Network Places lets you browse the local area network."
- Page 14
- Second paragrah - the location of the Startup folder should read \Documents and Settings\{username}\Start Menu\Startup
- Page 15
- Some of the callouts in Figure 2-4 are wrong. The arrows in the picture for items #6, #7, and #8 should be changed as follows:
- should point to the gray area between the scrollbar thumb (current #6) and the down arrow (#5)
- should point to the scrollbar thumb (current #6)
- should point to the up arrow (current #7)
- Page 16
- Third paragraph - change the second sentence so that it reads "The window with the focus is usually (but not always) the one on top of all the other windows, and is usually distinguished by a different border and title color."

- Fifth paragraph - remove the text "as shown in Figure 2-3."
- Page 17
- In the second tip on this page, first line, "Windows XP" should read "Windows."
- Page 21
- The last sentence in the (5) Grayed-out (inactive) controls paragraph should read: "In the dialog box shown in Figure 2-5, the currently selected screensaver doesn't have any applicable settings, so the Settings button is disabled."

- In the fifth paragraph, the sentence that begins with "Additional dots" should read as follows:
Use of additional dots (such as "...") used in some previous versions of Windows are not supported in Windows XP.

- In the last paragraph, the UNC path should should have a double-backslash prefix ("\\shoebox\o..." instead of "\shoebox\o...").

- In the last paragraph, "Like Current Folder" should read "Apply to All Folders"

- In the fifth paragraph, "Password protected" should read "Single-click to open an item"
- Page 39
- First paragraph - "receive input from keyboard" should read "receive input from the keyboard"

- First paragraph - "its inner parameter" should read "its inner parameter (classic style only)"

- Second paragraph - the reference to Figure 3-7 should be to Figure 3-6.

- First bullet item - the text here is correct, but the hockey reference is not. It is indeed possible for more than one person per team to occupy an ice hockey penalty box, each for separate lengths of time.

- Third bullet item; "test in the Address" should read "text in the Address"
- Page 44-45
- The last bullet item under "Clipboard" is redundant and should be removed.
- Page 45
- Figure 3-8 is wrong. The icon and context menu should be of a Recycle Bin.

- Last line - change "masked with asterisks" to "masked with asterisks or dots"
- Page 54
- The "Shortcuts" paragraph should be set apart as a tip.
- Page 75
- Third paragraph in "Tabbed Dialogs" section - change "taps" to "tabs."

- Last sentence under "interactive" - change "since won't be able" to "since you won't be able"

- Table 4-2, second row, last column - change "Clearthe" to "Clear the"

- Fourth buletted item, "secure errors" should be "obscure errors."

- Reference to Appendix C should be to Chapter 6.

- Usage for "Label" - the "label" parameter should appear in italics.

- The fourth example (referring to "...") should removed entirely.

- In the sixth example, the "\d" parameter should read "/d" (use a forward slash instead of a backslash).

- In the "Exit" section, "dir accepts" should be "exit accepts"

- In the examples for the "md" command, "rolling tones" should read "rolling stones"

- The /+n parameter should be +n.

- In tip #7, "Try something new with My Computer," there's a step missing.
In order for this tip to work, you'll also need to navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\ shell and change the (default) value to open.
- Page 512
- The second prefix in Table 9-2 should read "dat," not "date"
- Page 517
- The showhello code example should read as follows:

You may encounter an error to the effect that the Set command is currently disabled; unfortunately, this can only be fixed by returning to Windows and following this procedure:
- Start the Local Security Settings editor (secpol.msc).
- Navigate to \Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options in the tree.
- Double-click the Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and access to all drives and all folders entry.
- Click Enabled and then click Ok.
- Close the Local Security Settings editor when you're done.
- Return to the Recovery Console and try again.
- Page 555
- The first paragraph on this page discusses the missing My Computer icon on the desktop, but the tip immediately following is wrong. Instead, it should read as follows:
"By default, the My Computer icon is not shown on the Windows XP desktop, but it’s there if you need it. Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Desktop tab -> Customize Desktop, and turn on the My Computer option."

- The second Microsoft Power Toy mentioned here, the Super-Fast User Switcher, has been removed from Microsoft's website, and is no longer available.
Don't worry; it wasn't really that great.
- Page 582
- Although the alphabetical listing of filename extensions is not intended to include every extension in existence, the following extensions should've been included here:
- .pot PowerPoint Template
- .pps PowerPoint Presentation that opens into slide show
- .ppt PowerPoint Presentation (document)
- .pst Outlook personal folder file
- Page 604, Index
- The last item under the letter I in the index, "!IXGEN_DONT_EDIT_THIS," should not appear here.
- Page 609, Index
- The last sub-entry under "programs (applications), "Win 3.1, compatible with Win95" should be removed.
- Page 614, Index
- Page 458 should also be listed under UNC.
